Maybe you’ve seen the new Netflix show Tidying Up With Marie Kondo. Maybe you’ve even been inspired to declutter your own home. Turns out, you’re far from alone. Lots of people have been tidying up unwanted items this month, and secondhand stores are seeing the results.

On the show, Kondo encourages viewers to declutter their homes by getting rid of things that don’t “spark joy” for them.

Tim Gebauer is the Retail Director for Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois. He says they have had more donations this month than in past Januarys. And the show seems to be making an impact on donation trends.

Gebauer says, “It’s hard to say that there’s just one factor involved, but we have literally had customers dropping off talking about the Tidying Up show. So I know from some firsthand experience talking with customers that that is having some impact.”

In addition to the typical housewares and Christmas items Goodwill usually receives this time of year, clothing donations have been especially abundant.
