No Pot, Please: Morton Opts Out of Recreational Cannabis Sales

Jeff Smudde / WGLT

The village of Morton is one of the first communities in the state to opt out of allowing cannabis businesses within village limits.

The Village Board voted on Monday to approve an ordinance banning any cultivation centers, dispensaries, processors, transportation, or craft growing of cannabis in Morton.

The exemption for local communities from large swaths of businesses allowed under the recreational cannabis bill recently signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Under the new state law, people age 21 and over would still be able to possess up to 30 grams cannabis flower for recreational purposes in Morton.

Village President Jeff Kaufman said the ordinance was on the agenda to start a discussion.

Other Tazewell County communities have already allowed cannabis-related businesses in their communities. Delavan is home to a medical cannabis cultivation center that will soon expand into recreational growing. East Peoria has a medical dispensary.
