The Normal Town Council will vote Monday on future pay raises for the mayor and council.

Normal Town Council members will decide Monday whether to boost the pay for the mayor and town council starting in 2021.
Mayor Chris Koos is paid $18,000 per year. The mayor’s pay would be increased to $32,000 in May 2021 after the next election.

The town last increased the mayor’s salary in 2009 when the position paid $10,000.

In a memo to the council, town staff said the higher salary is more in line with compensation offered to mayors in other Illinois communities.

“The salary increase also acknowledges the growing demands played on the position of mayor in this community,” the memo stated. “The mayor’s position is, in theory, a part-time position. However, in reality, if often requires a time commitment in excess of 40 hours within a given week.”

The council will also consider a measure to raise annual pay $2,000. The proposed increase would apply to the three councilmembers who are elected and take office in 2021 and would then apply to the remaining three council members when they take office in 2023, according to a memo to the council.

Councilmembers currently make $4,800 annually. Their pay was last increased from $4,200 in 2005.

“The salary increase acknowledges the growing demands placed on the position,” the memo stated.
