Vacant big box stores in Peoria may soon find new life as indoor self-service warehousing.
Senior Urban Planner Leah Allison said there have been inquires about re-using these large spaces for individual storage units.
Current city code only allows this use for multi-story buildings, like the former hotel on Brandywine Drive that's now a U-Haul storage facility.
"It would allow a similar opportunity for a Kmart or the ShopKo to be converted into individual storage units," she said.
Kroger announced plans to open a "superstore" at the former Kmart across the parking lot from their current Evergreen Square location in 2015, but those plans stalled. A Kroger spokesman said Thursday he hasn't heard any updates "in quite some time."
The ShopKo at 2323 W. Pioneer Parkway closed in 2007.
The city council is set to vote on the ordinance later this month.
