Pekin Announces Fire Chief Kurt Nelson's Retirement

Tim Shelley / Peoria Public Radio

The city of Pekin is announcing the retirement of Fire Chief Kurt Nelson.

Nelson was hired in 1999. He worked his way up the department's ranks, becoming chief in 2010.

The chief's retirement was effective as of Monday.

Nelson was placed on paid administrative leave for an unknown reason several weeks ago. The city council met in executive session for about 40 minutes on Monday to discuss personnel matters or pending litigation.

In a brief statement, City Manager Mark Rothert said the city thanks Nelson for his service and wishes him well in retirement.
