Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce Says Pandemic Could Affect Finances

The Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce isn’t worried about keeping it’s doors open – yet – as the coronavirus pandemic strains local businesses. That’s according to Vice President of Operations Sherneka Cagle. She said the organization’s 1,000-plus members account for roughly 80% of the chamber’s budget.

“As of April we’re good financially. We’re not too worried -though we will start to worry if we see some of our members having to shutdown and not reopen,” said Cagle.

Cagle said most membership is due late this calendar year, and the chamber is evaluating membership dues as the pandemic evolves. She said chamber groups across Illinois are discussing ways to operate if small business conditions don’t improve over the next six months.

The search for a new chamber president and CEO remains on track. Chris Setti is serving on an interim basis following the December resignation of Jeff Griffin

The Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce is joining statewide counterparts on an initiative to support local and small businesses. The Illinois Love Local Initiative encourages shoppers to source locally before spending dollars elsewhere. Campaign officials report dollars spent at independent business provide greater local returns than money spent at big box stores.

The emphasis coincides with Department of Commerce figures released this month showing American retail sales plummeted more than 8% in March – the greatest drop on record.

Cagle said times are tough for many greater Peoria proprietors.

“We are hearing, you know, spending is down here in Peoria as well. Some of our businesses are just looking to stay afloat,” she said.

Cagle said ordering takeout or delivery, maintaining memberships, taking virtual classes and buying gift cards are easy ways to help local businesses during the shelter in place order.

The Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce is maintaining an online COVID-19 resource page. It includes assistance information for business owners and a public listing of currently open establishments.
