The city of Peoria will receive $500,000 to clean up a contaminated South Peoria plot. The U.S. Environmental Agency funding is earmarked for the former Tabor property on SW Adams Street and South Lydia Street. It will address contaminants on five parcels eyed for redevelopment including PCBs, pesticides, metals and semi-volatile organic compounds.

“We are excited to receive the award from the EPA because it's going to put a strategically located property back in use.  The grant money will remediate the environmental conditions of the property and add another business opportunity on this major corridor in our community,” Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis said in a printed release.

The Tabor property once housed commercial and industrial businesses including a salvage yard, rail yard storage, an oil and gasoline station, and a used car lot.

The funding was awarded from the EPA’s Brownfield Program, which helps nonprofits and communities clear sites for redevelopment. We’re living in unprecedented times when information changes by the minute.
