With half of the council attending via phone, the Peoria City Council updated the emergency powers of the mayor last night. The city has been in a state of emergency since March 18. The ordinance that was approved unanimously on Tuesday better reflects the full emergency powers granted to the mayor in existing state codes. One key change that was noted is the state of emergency will extend to coincide with the next city council meeting, approximately every two weeks instead of being issued every seven days. Mayor Ardis says since 2006 a state of emergency has been issued on six occasions, often for flooding. The main thing it allows is for the city to solicit reimbursement for emergency expenses from such agencies as FEMA.
