The sale of recreational marijuana in the City of Peoria moved a step closer to reality last night.
The Peoria City Council okayed special use permits to allow marijuana sales at two locations. One is in a strip mall near the corner of University and Forrest Hill. The site already sells medicinal marijuana. That permit request cleared the council without comment on a unanimous vote with council member Beth Jensen abstaining.
The second dispensary would be in the one-time Bogard Drug store across from the Lariat Steakhouse on Glen Avenue. Several residents who live nearby asked the council to deny the permit because of its proximity to residential neighborhoods.
The council voted for approval, however, on a seven-to-three vote, with Jensen abstaining.
Trinity Compassionate Care, which owns both facilities, still must receive state approval before sales can occur.
