Sterling Family Restaurant owner Louie Trilikis was honored by the City of Peoria for 30 years of service.

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis presented the proclamation amid the hustle and bustle of breakfast at the popular diner on Sterling Avenue.

“It really does remind us that someone who wants to work hard and persevere, treat people right and treat their customers right — we don’t see that very much anymore, Ardis said.

Trilikis came to Peoria from Greece in 1962 with ten dollars in his pocket and no knowledge of the English language.

Upon arriving, he started TNT Snack Shop with his brother, Pano. Trilikis worked from 3 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. every day and the snack shop and then — after a brief nap — returned to work painting the Murray Baker Bridge for the rest of the day.

In 1979, Trilikis opened Grecian Gardens restaurant in Chillicothe. Ten years later, Sterling Family Restaurant opened at 4315 N Sterling Ave. Trilikis announced in November he will close the resturant for good on December 31, 2019.

Trilikis attributed the success of his business to his family and loyal customers.

“I have no words to say, just thanks to all the people who have supported me all these years,” Trilikis said. “I love you and thank you very much.”
