Peoria Observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The water in the fountain at Peoria Heights’ Tower Park will run purple this October, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Fran Reyes is director of domestic violence family centered services at the Center for Prevention of Abuse in Peoria.

She said more than 20,000 calls are responded to every day by domestic violence hotlines in the U.S. Last year, 50,000 Illinoisans received services for abuse.

“We are serving more individuals, providing more counseling and therapy services, and providing more assistance for orders of protections than we ever have before,” she said.

The Center for Prevention of Abuse provides free and confidential services to any victims of domestic violence.

“Just this last year, we provided 9,380 nights of safe shelter for victims fleeing violence or abuse,” said CEO Carol Merna. “We provided 2,063 Orders of Protection and responded to more than 100 domestic violence medical advocacies in local hospital emergency rooms.”

The center also provides therapy, safety and financial planning, and legal and medical advocacy.

Help is available 24/7 at 1-800-559-SAFE.
