Peoria Takes Part in Nationwide Impeachment Protests

A frequent forum for political protest in Peoria was the host for about 100 ralliers calling for President Donald Trump's impeachment Tuesday.

Indivisible Peoria Area held up pro-impeachment signs at the busy intersection of University and Main, and chanted "lock him up" as passing cars honked and braked loudly.

Jean Sloan was one of the protestors.

"No one is above the law. Not the president. Not Congress," she said.

She said impeaching the president for his interactions with Ukraine isn't an attempted nullification of the 2016 presidential elections as Republicans have argued, but a confirmation that he is a president who needs to be removed for violating the Constitution.

"So, in what way can it be an overturning?" she said. "This is like the difference between an annulment and a divorce."

Across University, Seth Dixon of Galesburg held a solo counter-protest, heckling anti-Trump demonstrators with a megaphone and holding up a Trump flag.

The House is expected to pass articles of impeachment today, leading to a Senate trial where Republicans are expected to acquit.
