PHOTO GALLERY: Peoria Riverfront Flooding Recalls 2019 High Water

For the second consecutive year, towns along the Illinois River are battling major flooding.

The city of Peoria public works began erecting a flood wall Monday near the historic River Station, anticipating a crest just shy of 28 feet. Peoria’s flood stage is 18 feet.

The National Weather Service reported Friday morning’s depth was 27.9 feet. In 2019, the river crested at 27.35 on May 7, according to data NWS data. The record crest of 29.35 feet was recorded in April 2013.

WCBU’s Kristin McHugh visited the riverfront to document the flooding. Some images are eerily like ones she captured last year.
