The Bloomington City Council approved a body camera pilot program for the Bloomington Police Department. The trial will begin in January, when the funds from a $29,000 grant become available. Police Chief Brendan Heffner said body and dash cameras will come together to help the police force accurately report events.
The pilot program will enable the BPD to look at different camera makers and technologies. Heffner said officers will have a chance to evaluate various devices.
Heffner said the program could last sixty days or more, but that depends on multiple factors.
Other considerations include the cost of storing, managing, and redacting videos captured by body cameras.
The council also passed a Sidewalk Master Plan, which includes an award-winning rating system developed by city staff.
