Rep Brady To Vote No On MAP Funding

State lawmakers are considering funding community colleges and MAP tuition grants for low-income students, despite Republican Governor Bruce Rauner's rejection of the legislation.

Democratic Senators this afternoon voted to override Rauner's veto. Members of the Illinois House are currently debating whether they will do the same. The vote is expected to be close.

Republicans like Representative Dan Brady of Bloomington -- whose district includes Illinois State University --  say they'll vote no. "I can't think of anything that is more of a cruel hoax on the students across the state depending on MAP funding than proposing something that doesn’t have the money to pay for it,” Brady said.

Republicans say they have a better plan which includes a way to pay for the higher education spending. Unlike the Democrats’ version, it also sends dollars to four-year universities.

But Democrats control the General Assembly and have kept the G-O-P plan bottled up.

Each side accuses the other of playing politics.
