One Illinois congressman says he does not believe attitudes of most Americans towards gun control have changed following the Orlando nightclub mass shootings.

Republican Rodney Davis of Taylorville, who represents much of McLean County, told reporters in Normal he thinks this month's incident could have only been prevented if current laws were enforced.

"I do not believe that we can pass any law that would make the FBI do a better job of actually tracking (Orlando nightclub shooter) Omar Mateen," said Davis. "He was interviewed multiple times. He was on the terror watch list. He was taken off the terror watch list. In this case, it was a complete failure of law enforcement to enforce the laws we have."

Davis said he hopes the Obama administration and future administrations adopt recommendations put forth by the House Benghazi committee, which issued an 800-plus page report Tuesday. Davis said  there were clear State department failures that led to the deaths of four diplomats, including U. S. ambassador Chris Stevens.

Davis said  he hasn't read the lengthy report, but says there is one obvious recommendation.

"When an ambassador in a consulate, in a dangerous area like Benghazi, continuously sends requests for more security, and they fall on deaf ears, one recommendation obviously will be, I hope they listen next time," said Davis.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who was Secretary of State at the time, is blasting the report for its extreme partisan nature.
