Richwoods High School freshman MiKayla Young was thrilled to participate in a Black History 365 International Virtual Student Forum earlier this week to discuss the importance of teaching Black history in schools.

Peoria Public Schools is adopting the Black History 365 curriculum this fall. The new program presents a more inclusive account of American history.

Young said that inclusivity is essential, especially in today’s social climate.

"Black history, even though it wasn't intended to only be taught one month--it was made that way now. Since we barely talk about it, this is important, because now we'll be talking about it year-round. This is just a great opportunity to have," Young said.

Young feels having Black history taught year-round is a huge step in the right direction.

"I just think everybody should have a voice, and have their opinion be heard," she said. "Because without it, people can feel belittled. Especially Black people. Without Black history being taught, we can feel less included."
