Rochester Bishop Requested Sheen's Beatificiation Delay

archbishopfultonsheen.com

Archbishop Fulton Sheen's beatification was placed on hold at the request of the Bishop of Rochester, New York.

The Rochester diocese confirmed Thursday it requested Sheen's beatification in Peoria be delayed due to concerns the El Paso native could be caught up in an upcoming New York attorney general's priest sexual abuse report.

Sheen was the bishop of the Rochester diocese from 1966 to 1969.

The diocese of Peoria denies Sheen was ever accused of abuse or involved in a cover-up of abuse. The Diocese of Rochester said it while it doesn't believe Sheen himself behaved impropertly, its leaders believes the beatification ceremony should be delayed pending a review of Sheen's priest assignments while heading the diocese.

Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria says he's confident Sheen will still be beatified.
