School's In All Semester: Bradley Cancels 2021 Spring Break

Bradley University students won't get a spring break next semester. But they'll get a longer winter break to compensate.

Provost Walter Zakahi announced Friday that Bradley will cancel the traditional March 15-19 spring break as a COVID-19 exposure reduction measure. The spring semester will begin Jan. 27, a week later than usual.

"The goal is to put more time between when you return home in the fall and come back to campus in January. It also allows you and our employees time to quarantine after any travel taken during the holiday season," said Zakahi in a message to the campus community.

Study day remains on May 5, with finals scheduled for May 6-12.

"The later start and the elimination of spring break should reduce the possibilities for spreading the virus," said Zakahi. "We continue to base our decisions on science with input from health experts."

Bradley University returned to in-person learning from a two-week, all-student quarantine on Sept. 23. The campus COVID-19 positivity rate has declined drastically, from a high of more than 16% last month to just over 1% as of Oct. 8.

Some restrictions, such as going out to restaurants and bars, remain in place for students. The university has cited, fined, or begun suspension hearings for students violating the rules.
