Two non-profit organizations serving Peoria's South Side are combining to ensure services remain available to residents.
Neighborhood Houseprovides meals to the elderly and school age children. The operation is acquiring Common Place Family Learning Center, which offers educational support and job training.
Becky Rossman, CEO of Neighborhood House, said Common Place needed another organization to help maintain services. She said the acquisition will allow both organizations to maintain a strong presence in the community.
"With the external economic threats, such as increasing minimum wage, healthcare costs and decreased funding, it's these types of business strategies that are necessary for the sustainability of both non-profits and programs," Rossman said.
Doug Hanley, board chairman of Common Place, said they're optimistic about the opportunity to bring more resources to more residents by combining operations.
"This is a long term solution," he said. "It's not only doing to make it sustainable, but hopefully grow and benefit a lot of the people in the 61605 zip code."
Starting Jan. 1, all programming will be provided under the Neighborhood House name at their office at 1020 S Matthew St.
Transportation services will be available for residents who struggle to make it over from Common Place's current location at 514 S Shelley St.
