A new winery has won final approval from the Washington City Council to open.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a special use for the Tres Rojas winery at the Tarvin Farm property, 1774 E. Cruger Road.
Lisa Barry is the winery’s co-owner.
“Everything is laid out and ready to go. Hopefully we should have the slab poured and framing by the end of this year so we can open our doors in the spring," Barry said.
Tres Rojas currently has a small vineyard in rural Pekin and a Morton processing facility. They’ve been trying to expand for two years. Previous proposals were rejected in Peoria and East Peoria.
“We are beyond thankful that Washington had the vision of what a winery could bring to a community," she said.
Barry said the new vineyard in Washington should be up to full commercial production in three years. Until then, Tres Rojas has a back supply of wine, and may also purchase grapes from other vineyards.
She said they look forward to working with other Washington businesses on collaborations.
