The firm grip of a second COVID-19 wave produced more than 2,500 cases and 30 deaths in the Tri-County area over the past seven days, with health officials reporting 11 new fatalities in previous 24 hours on Friday.
Eight of the most recent deaths came from Tazewell County, half of whom were not associated with long-term care facilities, including a man in his 50s. Along with three Woodford County residents, they bring the region’s death toll since the start of the pandemic to 212.
The area added 312 additional coronavirus infections, bringing the case total to 14,712 since March – an increase of 2,539 since last Friday. Hospitalizations decreased from 201 on Thursday to 171, while the number of people isolating at home climbed to 4,222. Peoria-area Intensive Care Units are treating 41 COVID-19 patients.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 13,012 additional COVID-19 cases and 126 more deaths Friday, pushing the totals since March to 634,395 infections and 11,304 fatalities.
The statewide preliminary test positivity rate slipped slightly once again, now at 13.4%. Hospitals across the state have 61,111 coronavirus patients, including 1,196 in ICUs and 604 on ventilators.
