Tri-County Area Adds 9 COVID-19 Deaths; Hospitalizations Spike

Tri-County health officials reported nine new deaths linked to COVID-19 on Wednesday, while Peoria-area hospitals are treating nearly 60 more coronavirus patients than the day before.

Five of the most recent victims are from Peoria County--four men and one woman; two of the men had underlying health issues. The other deaths were two men and one woman from Woodford County, and one Tazewell County woman. Eight of the nine were in their 70s or older.

The region’s death toll since the start of the pandemic stands at 327, while the total number of cases grew to 22,882 with the addition of 334 infections since Tuesday.

Health officials reported 237 hospitalizations, up from 179 one day ago. Fifty of the patients at the hospitals are in intensive care units. The number of residents in home isolation dipped to 6,675.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 7,123 new confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases, and 146 additional deaths linked to the virus, bringing the statewide tallies since the start of the pandemic to 870,600 infections and 14,655 fatalities.

Hospitalizations numbered 4,793 as of Monday night, with 1,045 patients in ICUs and 590 on ventilators. The preliminary seven-day test positivity rate remained 10.3%.
