Two men from Tazewell County became the latest Tri-County deaths linked to COVID-19, while the region moved closer to 34,000 coronavirus infections – and to 100,000 administered doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

In Monday’s daily update, health officials from Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties reported 33,938 total cases since the start of the pandemic, an increase of 163 since Friday.

While 679 area residents are currently isolating at home, 11 of the 36 patients with COVID-19 in Peoria-area hospitals are being treated in intensive care units.

One of the recent Tazewell County victims was in his 80s while the other was in his 60s. The region’s death toll from the disease stands at 553, including 37 since the beginning of February. Across Illinois, 20,303 people have succumbed to COVID-19, with 63 new deaths reported in the past day.

Meanwhile, figures updated Monday on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s online database tracking vaccine administration indicated 95,270 shots have been provided in the Tri-County region. That represents an additional 6,131 shots since Friday, with 2,606 of those going to individuals who had already received their initial dose.

All told, 23,561 area residents are now fully vaccinated, or 6.8% of the region’s population; Peoria County alone has 13,672 individuals (7.6%) who have gotten both shots of the COVID vaccine. The Tri-County has averaged about 2,400 daily injections over the past week, putting the region on target to top the 100,000-mark by Wednesday.

With 59,748 vaccine doses administered in the past day, Illinois stands at 2,211,700 injections. That includes 571,260 second doses, with 24,436 individuals receiving booster shots since Sunday. The state’s seven-day rolling average for administered doses is 55,498.

IDPH reported 1,246 new coronavirus infections in Illinois since Sunday, bringing the state’s case total since mid-March to 1,175,655. The preliminary seven-day positivity rate continued to tick downward, coming in at 3.1%. Hospitals across the state were treating 1,504 patients infected with the coronavirus as of Sunday night, with 377 in ICUs and 169 on ventilators.
