Tri-County Region Sees Largest 1-Day Spike in New COVID-19 Cases

The Tri-County region reported its largest one-day spike of new positive COVID-19 cases to date on Friday.

Twenty-seven new cases were reported, for a total of 309. Peoria City/County Health Department Administrator Monica Hendrickson said most of 25 of the new cases from Peoria County were linked to University Rehab at Northmoor, which tested all residents and staff for the virus after two initial tests came back positive.

Hendrickson said a majority of the cases are asymptomatic.

"Many people have this virus, and until you get tested, you don't necessarily know your status," she said. "So that's why it's really important to get tested."

Only two ICU beds are in use for COVID-19 patients in the area. Twenty non-ICU beds are in use. Seventy-seven percent of COVID-19 patients in the Tri-County area are considered recovered.

Peoria County recently obtained around 2,000 tests to distribute to area nursing homes. Staff members were trained to administer the tests to residents.
