Tri-County Reports 6 New COVID-19 Deaths; State Nears 1M Cases

One woman and three men from Tazewell County and two Peoria County men are the latest Tri-County residents to die from COVID-19 as Illinois approaches 1 million coronavirus infections.

Tri-County health officials reported 212 new COVID cases on Wednesday, bringing the region’s tally to 27,739 since mid-March. Active cases dropped by 253, with 2,469 residents in home isolation and 111 patients being treated in Peoria-area hospitals, including 33 in intensive care units.

The new fatalities bring the area’s death toll to 436. One of the Peoria County victims was in his 50s and had underlying health conditions; the other five new victims were in their 70s or older.

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Wednesday reported 7,569 new COVID cases to bring the tally to 999,288, while 139 additional deaths raised the fatality figure to 17,096.

The state's preliminary seven-day positivity rate rose slightly to 9.9%. Across the state, hospitals had 3,928 coronavirus patients as of Tuesday night with 812 in ICUs and 451 on ventilators.
