While the Tri-County area produced its most deaths linked to COVID-19 over a seven-day stretch since late January, the region also saw active coronavirus infections decline precipitously in the past three weeks.
Tri-County health officials on Friday reported four new COVID-19 fatalities in Tazewell County, bringing the region’s death toll to 541 since the start of the pandemic, and 17 in the last week. That marks the most fatalities in a seven-day period since 21 from Jan. 19-26.
The region added 119 new coronavirus infections in the past day as the case total climbed to 33,216. However, Peoria-area hospitalizations remained unchanged at 37 while the number of residents isolating at home fell to 1,329. The combined total of 1,366 is a steep drop from 2,859 on Jan. 22.
Three of the most recent victims were women from long-term care facilities--one in her 50s and two in their 90s. A man in his 90s also perished.
Meanwhile, updated figures from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) show 74,426 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties with 12,384 people fully vaccinated with a second dose--or 3.52% of the region’s total population.
The three counties’ combined rolling seven-day average for administered doses stands at 1,807, with 2,289 new injections in the past day alone. Statewide, 1,644,483 doses have been administered and 374,722 people are fully vaccinated.
Illinois health officials reported 2,598 new COVID-19 cases and 32 additional deaths since Thursday. The state’s totals from the pandemic now stand at 1,158,431 illnesses and 19,873 lives lost. Hospitals across Illinois have 1,915 patients being treated for COVID-19, with 437 in intensive care units and 211 on ventilators. The preliminary seven-day positivity rate is down to 3.7%.
