The Tri-County area and the state of Illinois continue to surpass milestones with COVID-19 vaccinations, while daily reports of new infections and deaths keep getting smaller.
Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties have combined for more than 125,000 administered vaccine doses and 45,000 fully vaccinated residents, according to figures updated Friday by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). Additionally, Tri-County health officials reported no new fatalities linked to the pandemic in the past day, and just 39 more coronavirus infections.
Illinois surged past the 3-million mark for total vaccine doses administered, along with more than 1 million residents fully vaccinated. The IDPH’s vaccine tracking database showed an increase of 131,882 new injections in one day to bring the state’s tally to 3,125,425, with 67,544 booster doses pushing the number of second doses to 1,019,685 – or 8% of the state’s population.
The latest figures also show 3,637 shots administered in the Tri-County area since Thursday, including 2,297 follow-up injections. The region has now reported 125,272 total injections and 45,439 people have gotten two doses, representing 12.9% of residents. The three counties have averaged 2,600 daily shots over the past week.
While the area’s COVID-19 death toll remained at 585, the case tally increased to 34,515 with the latest additions, marking 314 new infections over the last seven days after a jump of 826 in the week prior. Five of the 25 patients in Peoria-area hospitals for coronavirus infections are in intensive care units, while 345 people are isolating at home.
The IDPH announced 1,442 new illnesses and 33 more deaths statewide since Thursday. Illinois has logged 1,194,702 cases of COVID-19 and 20,700 deaths. The state’s preliminary seven-day positivity rate ticked back down to 2.8%.
