Tropical Storm Remnants Arrive In Central Illinois Tuesday

Kristin McHugh/WCBU

The leftovers of former tropical storm Cristobal will bring rain and wind to central Illinois Tuesday.

That’s according to Llyle Barker, the science and operations officer with the National Weather Service in Lincoln.  The storm made landfall in southeast Louisiana Sunday.

Barker says Greater Peoria can expect roughly an inch of rain. But he says an umbrella likely won’t protect you.

“One of the things we will notice, though, is a pick up of the winds," he says. "Right now we are expecting wind gusts approaching 40 mph or so.”

Barker says sustained winds could reach 25 mph. He adds there’s a chance for isolated severe weather Tuesday afternoon and evening.

He says the heaviest rainfall is expected along and west of the Mississippi River, where flash flood watches are already posted.

“Most of the heavier rainfall with the storm is expected to be west of the Peoria area," he says. "We’re looking along a Quincy to Davenport area, where the could pick up 2-3 inches of rain.”

Barker says it’s not unusual for tropical storms to affect central Illinois weather, but he says it’s unusual for it to happen this early into the hurricane season, which started June 1 and runs through end of November.
