The Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA) has recognized WGLT’s newsroom with two national awards for its investigative reporting and morning newscast.

The PMJA awards recognize the best work in public media journalism from across the country.

WGLT earned first-place honors for Enterprise/Investigation work for reporter Mary Cullen’s story about the resignation of Unit 5’s former HR director. WGLT also earned first place for Newscast for Jon Norton’s morning newscast on Aug. 22, 2019.

WGLT competed against other midsized newsrooms across the country in PMJA’s Division B. Across all divisions, judges reviewed nearly 1,300 entries and made 179 awards.

“These are our national peers, and public media outlets have some of the highest quality journalists working in the nation today,” said WGLT News Director Charlie Schlenker. “To win one national award is significant. Two in one year is notable.”

WGLT recently earned eight Illinois AP Broadcasters Association awards and three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for its reporting in 2019.
