McLean County administrators and elected officials will wait to comment on a drowning at Evergreen Lake. County Administrator Bill Wasson and Board Chair John McIntyre said they will defer comment on whether additional safety measures are needed until the investigation is closed.

The McLean County sheriff's department is looking for the public's help finding a suspect who impersonated a police officer during a traffic stop over the weekend.

Thirteen years ago, the City of Bloomington bolted the joint emergency service dispatch operation known in McLean County as Metcom. That created years of hard feelings from other area governments over the abandoned agreement and the extra cost it created for taxpayers.

The McLean County sheriff’s department is asking for the public’s help finding the person who dumped two dead dogs on the side of the road west of Bloomington on Thursday morning.

McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage is running for re-election. Sandage cited achievements in increasing drug enforcement efforts as a reason he hopes people will vote for him again.

"We have dedicated another detective to our detective division and started running narcotics cases out of our detective division. We have also added a K-9 unit to the patrol division and we are working a lot more drug interdiction details," said Sandage.

Construction is finally underway for the highly anticipated McLean County Jail expansion. 

The McLean County Board held a groundbreaking ceremony for the $39 million project Monday morning. 

The three-story addition will have a first floor area for visitors and space on the second floor for inmates with mental health concerns.

It’s a commonly believed myth that the suicide rate increases during the holiday season. But last week, McLean County experienced an unusual uptick: three men took their lives in a 24 hour period. And then 48 hours later, there was one more suicide. Kathy Davis is the McLean County Coroner and is working with social service providers to prevent suicides and has joined the Illinois Suicide Prevention Alliance. She tells WGLT's Mike McCurdy she's worried by the recent increase.

The McLean County Sheriff's Department is getting a new canine unit. Sheriff John Sandage says that's through a $59,000 grant from the Howard Buffet Foundation.

Sheriff's police already have one drug dog on staff. Eight weeks of training starts in January.

Sandage says the grant pays for the dog, equipment, a new vehicle, and eight weeks of training.

Sandage says the Buffet Foundation offers canine unit grants through Illinois and has also supported Macon County mental health programs.
