McLean County Board – Republicans currently hold a 13-7 majority. For Democrats to win control, they would have to protect two Democratic seats (George Gordon/District 6 and Carlo Robustelli/District 8) and win 4 of 5 seats now held by Republicans.

McLean County Democrats went for former Vice President Joe Biden in Tuesday’s primary election, as the coronavirus depressed turnout and support for Sen. Bernie Sanders eroded.

UPDATED 11 p.m. | Betsy Dirksen Londrigan fended off a challenge from Stefanie Smith to win the Democratic primary in the 13th Congressional District race and earn a rematch against Republican incumbent Rodney Davis of Taylorville.

McLean County Auditor Michelle Anderson survived a rare primary challenge of an incumbent countywide officeholder, defeating Trisha Malott. She’s now headed for a three-way race in November.

Illinois State University student Hannah Beer defeated longtime Democratic McLean County Board member George Gordon in Tuesday’s primary election. Democrat Lea Cline won out over Nathan “Chiko” Russo in the only other contested primary for County Board.

State Rep. Dan Brady beat back his Republican primary challenger for a second time Tuesday, although by a smaller margin than he did two years ago.

Four years ago, black voter turnout declined in the U.S. for the first time in 20 years for a presidential election. Aiming to make a comeback starting with Tuesday’s primary, black voters in Bloomington-Normal say they’re adamant about educating themselves on the issues, hoping to make strategic selections that will result in progressive policymaking in the future.

Among the many uncertainties the coronavirus has created in central Illinois is election turnout.

"That is the question of the decade," said McLean County Clerk Kathy Michael.

Concerns about the coronavirus prompted the two election authorities in McLean County to move several polling sites less than one week before the Illinois primary election.

In the second biggest Democratic primary night next to Super Tuesday, March 10 has six contests. Idaho, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota and Washington state are choosing Democratic presidential nominees.

Republican challenger David Paul Blumenshine’s main criticism of state Rep. Dan Brady ahead of their March 17 primary rematch is that Brady voted to “raise our taxes 20 different ways” last year.

That is not true.

The Democratic McLean County Board candidates for downtown and the west side of Bloomington have similar positions on issues but different biographies.

Longtime McLean County Board member George Gordon said he remains interested and engaged with public policy. He said he is running for another term to see certain projects through, such as the county's creation of several behavioral health initiatives.

McLean County Republican auditor candidate Trisha Malott said she wants to build relationships between the auditor's office and other county office holders and department heads.
