For the first time in more than 14 years, the Normal Public Library is in need of a new director.
That’s because Brian Chase is stepping away from the role effective on Thursday. He’s accepted the executive director position at a library in Fort Myers, Fla.

Since 2008, Chase aided in multiple library renovation projects, including remodeling to the main floor and Discovery Room. He also directed the creation of additional parking, accessible restrooms, and the NPL Foundation that helps support the library with more fundraising and programming. Chase also ended overdue fines and DVD fees.
NPL Board of Trustees chairperson Jess Ray said Chase's focus on the public’s experience is appreciated.
“He cemented a team-oriented approach to providing a patron-centric culture at the library,” said Ray in a press release. “The board certainly appreciates all he has done for the Normal Public Library. We wish him all the best.”
John Fischer will take over as interim director starting July 1. Fischer received a master in fine arts degree from Illinois State University in 2000, and has worked in public libraries for more than two decades.
The NPL Board of Trustees will begin the process to find a permanent director next month.
