3 things to do this weekend: Labor Day films, farmers’ market and Uptown music

Several people are sitting in camping chairs on a grassy area, watching a live outdoor concert on a stage under trees. The text reads "3 Things To Do This Weekend" and includes the WGLT.org logo and 89.1 FM.

Here are 3 things to do for the weekend of Aug. 30-Sept. 1, 2024, curated by WGLT's Lauren Warnecke. You can find more coverage on our Datebook - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WGLT's Weekend Scoop email newsletter, which goes out every Friday.

Seize the Day: Two films epitomizing the power of workers grace the big screen on this Labor Day Weekend: Newsies and Norma Rae. The latter, released in 1979, stars Sally Field, who won an Academy Award for the title role. Norma Rae is based on the true story of Crystal Lee Sutton, who was fired for insubordination after calling out union busting activities at a North Carolina textile factory. Show times at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Normal Theater; $7 at normaltheater.com.

Chill in the circle: Uptown Circle is an extra dreamy hangout during summer twilight—particularly when live music joins the party. This week, Normal’s Marcos Mendez serves up his unique blend of roots rock and blues. 6 p.m. Saturday; free. normalil.gov.

Stock up: Tomato season is fleeting. No matter how you feel about this precious fruit, there’s no better time to get fresh produce at the downtown Bloomington Farmers’ Market. For one-stop shopping, you can also find artsy wares, meat and cheese, get your knives sharpened and top it off with a frosted cookie. 7:30 a.m. Saturday in Museum Square. downtownbloomington.org.
