Short play workshop returns as the window to enter Heartland's 10-minute Play Festival opens

A middle-aged woman sits at her laptop, gazing at the camera with a distressed expression. She's surrounded by three actors hovering over her. All appear to be talking to her at the same time.

Heartland Theatre Company's play writing workshop is back by popular demand, repeating last spring’s course, Writing the Short Play.

Award-winning playwright Bruce Boeck of Normal is slated to lead the 5-week program on developing short plays, including character development, establishing a narrative arc and packing dynamic dialog and conflict into a bite-sized script.

The course, running Tuesday evenings in October, comes just in time for Heartland's 10-minute play competition. The 22nd edition of the international contest invites plays remarking on this year’s theme: The Rummage Sale. Selections will be performed early next summer.

Workshop applications for Writing the Short Play are due Sept. 25. Participation is limited to 15 people and includes a $50 fee on the first class. All sessions take place at Heartland Theatre, in the Normal Community Activity Center at 1110 Douglas St.

The 10-minute Play Festival deadline to enter is Feb. 1, 2025, with submissions accepted online at heartlandtheatre.org.
