Democrat Rankin Won't Seek Re-Election To McLean County Board

Democrat Erik Rankin announced Tuesday he won't seek re-election to the McLean County Board in 2018.

Rankin, who has served on the county board since 2008, said he intended to "move forward and pursue other opportunities." It was unclear if he plans to seek another elected office.

Rankin currently represents District 9 on the McLean County Board, along with Republican Susan Schafer. She's not up for re-election until 2020.

"I have been honored to serve the residents of South Bloomington on the McLean County Board for the past three terms," Rankin said in a Facebook post. "I have worked hard to represent their interests and to be their voice, since being elected. Today, I believe it's time for me to move forward and pursue other opportunities, and to open the door for another to represent my District on the County Board, which is why I am announcing I do not intend to seek re-election in 2018.

"Being elected by my neighbors, and supported by my friends and family, has been one of the highlights of my career. I believe that new ideas and a fresh set of eyes on the the unique challenges in this fiscal climate is important. I will continue to serve the remainder of my term and look forward to new challenges in the future," Rankin said.

Rankin is an undergraduate student advisor and assistant to the chair at Illinois State University's Department of Politics and Government.
