Four Connecticut librarians spoke bitterly Tuesday about a months' long gag order they were subjected to after the FBI requested patrons' records under the Patriot Act. The librarians decried their inability to participate in congressional debate on how to rewrite the act.

California High Court Reinstates School Exit Exam
The California Supreme Court has reinstated the state's high school exit exam as a graduation requirement. The divided ruling means that 47,000 seniors who haven't passed the test may not be able to graduate.

Three Guantanamo Detainees Commit Suicide
Three detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp took their own lives early Saturday. Two were from Saudi Arabia, a third from Yemen. All three hanged themselves, and left suicide notes written in Arabic.

Testing Pressures Come to Baltimore High School
The No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law in 2002, mandated standardized testing in the nation's public schools to establish a measure of accountability among states and school districts for the academic performance of their students. The pressures of such testing are most acutely felt among the schools which perennially have low scores, like Northwestern High School in Baltimore.
