Robert talks with Jean Quan, the new president of the Oakland Board of Education. They discuss a new resolution, which is expected to be passed by the Oakland School Board at a special meeting tomorrow night, which clarifies the school district's controversial Ebonics policy. The policy states that Ebonics, or Black English, should be treated as a second language...but that it should not be a substitute for standard English. Certain portions of the policy had referred to Ebonics as the primary language of black students and implied a genetic predisposition for speaking Ebonics. These portions, which many parents and students found offensive, will be eliminated from the text of the policy.
