The White House is announcing today that the federal government will hire as many as ten-thousand welfare recipients over the next few years. A few of the new workers will be employed at the White House, while the rest will be hired by other agencies. NPR's Mara Liasson looks at the possible impact of the move, which is intended to encourage private firms to help people end their dependency on public assistance.
