The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing that airlines be required to improve the fuel system wiring and vent systems on Boeing 737s. The proposed rules, which are now in a 45-day comment period, stem from the investigation of the TWA Flight 800 explosion. The cause of that blast has not been determined, but the investigation turned up the possibility that sparks could reach the center fuel tank where fuel vapors could ignite.
