'Phishing' Scam Possible Cause Of ISU Data Breach

Staff

Last week's data breach at Illinois State University may have been caused by ISU employees falling victim to "phishing" emails.

President Larry Dietz says internal and external probes are still on-going, but one possibility is employees may have clicked on a suspicious email that created a path for unscrupulous computer hackers to gain access to sensitive payroll and personal information.

"I think we acted responsibly and quickly," Dietz said. "I'm not concerned about major, major breaches beyond the usual daily concern. People need to be careful whenever they have inquiries into their email system, about where those emails are coming from."

13 ISU employees had their payroll deposits directed away from their personal bank accounts last week. Dietz says there are other possible scenarios and that he expects federal criminal charges will be filed against those responsible, if and when they are caught.
