Heartland Community College is honoring a former school president with a plaza dedication in his name.
The college held a ribbon-cutting celebration Wednesday for Widmer Family Plaza in honor of Rob Widmer. He was Heartland's president for five years, who worked 22 years at the school in Normal until his retirement in 2018.
The plaza is located in front of the Community Commons Building. It includes landscaping and pedestrian sidewalks.
Heartland officials said Widmer guided the college through tough financial times and played a major role in planning the main campus in Normal, including several buildings and the wind turbine.
“Rob Widmer is a passionate advocate for education and for over two decades at Heartland Community College, he was dedicated to our mission of providing accessible, equitable learning experiences that enrich individuals and our community,” said Heartland Community College President Keith Cornille.
Heartland officials said the project was partially funded with private donations.
