There is an outbreak of the coronavirus at The Villas in Sherman.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases associated with a nursing home in Sherman nearly doubled Tuesday. The increase accounts for all but one newly reported case in Sangamon County, where 153 residents have tested positive.

Twenty more staff and 20 more residents at The Villas Senior Community have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Sangamon County Department of Public Health reported a total of 81 cases, including five deaths associated with The Villas. Seventeen residents are currently hospitalized at Memorial Medical Center and HSHS St. John’s Hospital.

The health department provided 100 tests to The Villas, primarily to screen staff.

Last week, a spokeswoman for the facility said staff are following all infection control procedures.

The county health department confirmed the outbreak last Tuesday.

The youngest person to test positive at the facility was a staff member in her teens, and those with confirmed cases include several residents in their 90s.

In Sangamon County, nearly 1,800 coronavirus tests have been done, and the county health department reports 36 people have recovered from the virus.
