Peoria Public Schools Continues Adjusting to Distance Learning

Peoria Public Schools continues to adapt to the new reality of distance learning.

At Monday's board meeting, the board discussed both the future and current adjustments the district will have to make, for both the administration and the students.

Comptroller Mike McKenzie gave a presentation on the ongoing state of the district’s budget. Though the district was the recipient of around $4.3 million in federal funds, there are several concerns going into the next school year.

"The big, major impact we really expect to see is really next year," he said. "It's really too soon to see what the state's going to do with their budget on how evidence-based funding is going to affect us, and really, personal property replacement tax, which is a big number."

The district estimates a surplus of around $1 million from its education fund to roll over into the next year.

The district has also been working to keep up as many of its traditions as possible, including a digital spirit week, where students dressed up in themes for their distance learning classes, and bringing around yard signs to celebrate the accomplishments of their seniors.

Those seniors will be graduating digitally online, with the meeting also voting to suspend graduation requirements, in line with the recommendations of the governor and state.
