The Illinois State Police say a Fulton County man shot and killed by officers apparently aimed a black BB gun, modeled to look like a real semi-automatic handgun, at them before they opened fire.
A Fulton County deputy and Lewistown police officer shot at 26-year-old Justin Hammack of Lewistown the evening of Nov. 4, after Hammack turned the weapon--that was pointed at his own head--toward the officers.
Hammack was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. He was wanted on a warrant for resisting a peace officer.
The state police say witness accounts back up the sequence of events, though there isn't any body or dash camera footage of the incident. State police recovered Hammack's weapon at the scene, and determined it was a BB gun. Investigators are seeking cell phone video from other witnesses.
The investigation is ongoing.
