Five new deaths linked to COVID-19 in the Tri-County area bring the tally to 40 in the past seven days.
A Tazewell County woman in her 90s was the only one of the latest fatalities reported Wednesday not associated with a long-term care facility. The others include one Peoria County woman in her 80s and two men and another woman from Tazewell County, all over 70.
That brings the region's death toll since the start of the pandemic to 367, marking an increase of 103 dating back to Dec. 2.
Tri-County health officials reported 224 new coronavirus infections on Wednesday, pushing the area case count to 24,274. Of the 177 coronavirus patients in Peoria-area hospitals, 56 are in intensive care units. The number of infected residents in home isolation dropped to 5,884, while 18,419 people have recovered from the disease.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 6,762 new COVID-19 cases and an additional 135 fatalities, pushing the statewide totals to 918,070 illnesses and 15,547 deaths. As of Tuesday night, Illinois hospitals were treating 4,593 people with the coronavirus, including 953 in ICUs and 536 on ventilators. The preliminary seven-day positivity rate is at 9%.
