A Peoria County woman in her 60s with underlying health conditions is the Tri-County area's only new death linked to COVID-19 reported Thursday.

Figures released by Tri-County health officials show 388 new coronavirus illnesses since Wednesday, raising the region’s infection tally since the start of the pandemic to 28,077. The death toll stands at 435.

Active cases increased by 59, to 2,639. Twenty-seven of the 112 patients in Peoria-area hospitals are being treated in intensive care units.

Peoria City/County Health Department Administrator Monica Hendrickson said the average number of cases is on the rise again - though it's too early to tell if there will be a post-New Year's surge.

"Since last week, our weekly change in cases has increased by 210, which is concerning as we are entering the time period where we are seeing the impacts of New Year's, and maybe the secondary infections from Christmas. The average number of cases increased by 30 cases in the last week, from 208 to 238," she said.

Meanwhile, Illinois officially moved past 1 million COVID-19 cases as state officials added 8,758 infections to the total of 1,008,045.

The death toll reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health is up to 17, 272 with the addition of 177 new fatalities.  The state's seven-day positivity rate is 9.8%.
