Major Flooding In Gibson City After Rapid Rainfall

Many homes and businesses in Gibson City sustained heavy damage after upwards of 9 inches of rain fell Thursday in just a 5-hour period.

Between 4 and 8 inches of rain fell (locally as high as 9 inches) across parts of southern Ford County, according to the National Weather Service. Gibson City is located about 30 miles east of Bloomington-Normal.

There were numerous water rescues needed Thursday in Gibson City, including at a senior center that was inundated with water, according to reports received by the weather service. At one point Thursday afternoon all roadways in Gibson City were impassable, some with several feet of water over them.

The Harvest Moon Twin Drive-In theater sustained heavy damage and is closed at least through the weekend.

All of Gibson City is under a boil under until further notice.

A flood warning remained in effect until 2:45 a.m. Friday.
