Heartland Community College (HCC) students will soon be able to travel abroad easier, thanks to funding from the Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program.
The $35,300 grant is funded by the U.S. Department of State. Its purpose is to provide the opportunity for students who usually don’t have the time or money to travel abroad to do so.
Amy Pawlik, HCC's associate vice president of enrollment and student services, said the programs will be shorter than the traditional semester-long experiences.
"We are looking to develop some 1-2 week study abroad experiences and also enhance our international cultural events for students on campus,” said Pawlik.
The shorter time outside of the U.S. makes traveling abroad less expensive and time consuming, and therefore easier for students to attend.
Study abroad trips to South Africa, Tanzania and Finland are planned. Students will study how climate change impacts agriculture and learn about renewable energy and industrial technology, among other subjects.
Heartland is one of 44 colleges across the country receiving IDEAS grant funding.
