Bloomington City Council member Julie Emig has announced she is taking a medical leave through the end of November.
Emig said in a city-issued news release that other council members and city staff will help with constituent services while she is away.
“I appreciate everyone’s patience as I worked with my health care providers to determine the best course of action,” Emig said.
Emig, who is executive director of the McLean County Museum of History, has been absent for the last four council and committee of the whole (non-voting) meetings going back to Sept. 19.
Emig was elected in 2019 to represent Ward 4 that includes parts of downtown and neighborhoods east of downtown.
“I feel buoyed by the community and deeply appreciate the expressions of care and support I have received. I am lucky to have an incredible family, steadfast friends, and good health insurance — what I wish for us all — and look forward to making a full recovery,” Emig said.
The museum announced on Monday development director Norris Porter has been named acting executive director. Museum officials indicated Emig's prognosis is exceptionally good with a full recovery expected, though it did not provide specifics.
"I have complete confidence in Porter’s leadership,” Emig said in a statement. “The museum is in great hands.”
The city council on Monday is scheduled to vote on a new five-year, $1.9 million contract with Axon, the company that supplies the Bloomington Police Department with body cameras and storage.
The council also will hear a monthly financial report during its next meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Government Center.
